The Great Canadian Canoe Race echoes the historic tradition of wilderness exploration by canoe in Canada, while adding the challenges of competition and physical endurance. It is a unique attraction for outdoor enthusiasts, highlighting the world-class Powell Forest Canoe Route. Race organizers hope to attract participants from the Sunshine Coast region, Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland, and the Pacific Northwest.
The first annual Great Canadian Canoe Race was on August 21st and 22nd, 2004. The demanding 83 km course encompassed two days of canoeing and portaging through the breathtaking scenery of Powell River’s lakes and forests. Beginning on Lois Lake, the first day took the paddlers over more than 25 km of water and 8 km of land, to an overnight camp at Goat Lake . Times are logged as each canoe arrives at the designated area. On the final day, all canoes proceeded North around Goat Island, and 30 km down Powell Lake to the finish line at the beach in Mowat Bay. Second day times were added to the first day's to determine final standings. Total prize money was set at $30,000, divided among the several categories.
The Powell River area is rich with outdoor recreational resources. Our climate and terrain provide ideal venues for year round activity. The tremendous natural assets and the related businesses of Powell River will be showcased to all of Canada and the United States through both the Great Canadian Canoe Race and the Outdoor Recreation Trade Show. Plans are underway to promote these projects through related trade shows, publications, and directly to paddling clubs. Download the race application form here.
